The Western leaf-footed bug (Leptoglossus zonatus) is a significant agricultural pest belonging to the Coreidae family, order Hemiptera. It is easily identified by the leaf-like expansions on its hind tibiae and a distinct white, zigzagging band across the corium of its forewings, which distinguishes it from other related species in the genus.

This insect is a polyphagous pest with an extensive host range that includes both economically important vegetable and fruit crops. Common hosts include tomatoes, corn, citrus fruits, pomegranates, pistachios, and various legumes. Due to its adaptability, it can thrive in diverse environments, causing widespread damage in both tropical and temperate agricultural zones.

The biology of Leptoglossus zonatus consists of an egg stage, five nymphal instars, and the adult phase. Females typically deposit eggs in linear chains on the underside of host plant leaves or stems. Nymphs, which resemble smaller, wingless versions of the adults, undergo progressive molts, feeding continuously on plant sap throughout their development.

The primary damage is caused by both nymphs and adults piercing plant tissues with their needle-like mouthparts to extract sap from fruits and seeds. This feeding activity leads to localized tissue death, discoloration, and deformation of fruits. In crops like tomatoes, it creates yellow spots that eventually turn into necrotic lesions, facilitating the entry of fungi and bacteria that cause fruit rot.

Effective management strategies for this pest involve an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) approach:

• Regular field scouting to detect early infestations and destroy egg clutches.
• Cultural control measures such as removing alternative host weeds and cleaning up crop debris.
• Targeted application of insecticides during the early nymphal stages when they are most vulnerable.
• Encouraging natural predators, such as egg parasitoids and spiders, within the agricultural ecosystem.
