Shot hole borer (Leptoxyleborus punctatissimus)

Systematic position. This beetle is classified within the order Coleoptera, family Curculionidae, and subfamily Scolytinae. Known as an ambrosia beetle, it exhibits complex social behavior and a specialized symbiotic relationship with fungi within its tunnels.

Host plants. The pest targets a variety of broad-leaved trees, showing a preference for hosts that are stressed or weakened by environmental factors. In agricultural and forestry sectors, it can cause severe economic losses by colonizing healthy-looking but vulnerable wood tissues.

Biology and life cycle. Development occurs entirely within the host wood. Adults bore deep galleries where they introduce fungal spores. The developing larvae feed exclusively on the fungal growth rather than the wood itself. The life cycle is typically synchronized with environmental conditions, allowing for multiple generations per year in warm climates.

Character of damage and harmfulness. The physical damage caused by tunneling disrupts the tree's vascular system, leading to wilting, branch dieback, and potentially tree mortality. Furthermore, the tunnels act as galleries for secondary infections, including pathogenic fungi that further degrade the wood structure.

Control measures. Controlling this pest is challenging due to its cryptic nature inside the wood. Effective management strategies include:

• Sanitation logging and prompt removal of infested wood.
• Monitoring population levels using specific pheromone-based traps.
• Improving tree vigor through proper irrigation and nutrient management to prevent colonization.
• Application of systemic insecticides during peak adult flight periods.
• Strict adherence to quarantine regulations to prevent the spread of the beetle to new regions.
