Diamond-backed spittlebug

The Lepyronia quadrangularis, commonly known as the Diamond-backed spittlebug, is an insect species belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Aphrophoridae. It is a well-documented pest known for its sap-sucking habits which significantly impact both agricultural crops and ornamental plants.

This pest has a broad host range, feeding on various plants including legumes like alfalfa and clover, grasses, and numerous field crops. Both nymphs and adults extract plant fluids, causing stress to the host plants throughout their feeding period, which is particularly detrimental during the active growth phase.

The biological cycle consists of eggs overwintering in plant stems, followed by five nymphal instars and the adult stage. The defining characteristic of the nymphs is the production of a frothy, spittle-like mass that covers their body, providing a microclimate that protects them from predators and desiccation.

The damage caused by the Diamond-backed spittlebug results in stunting, leaf chlorosis, and general physiological weakness of the plant. Furthermore, persistent feeding creates entry points for various pathogens, potentially leading to secondary infections that further reduce crop yields and quality.

Management strategies focus on cultural practices and targeted chemical interventions. Effective measures include weed control in field margins to eliminate alternate hosts, crop rotation, and the use of approved insecticides when pest populations exceed economic injury levels. Regular scouting for "spittle masses" is crucial for early detection.
