The pine needle scale (Leucaspis coniferarum) belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Diaspididae. As a specialized pest, it primarily targets conifer trees, feeding on the sap of needles and young twigs, which can significantly impact the health and aesthetic value of trees in both forest and landscape settings.
Host plants commonly affected by this insect include various species of pines, spruces, and junipers. The pest is particularly problematic in dense plantings where high humidity and limited air movement create ideal conditions for its proliferation, often affecting trees that are already under environmental stress.
The biology of the pest revolves around its protective shield, which guards the immobile females and their eggs. The life cycle transitions from eggs to crawlers (the first instar stage), which are the only mobile phase of the life cycle. Crawlers actively move across the host plant to locate suitable sites for feeding and attachment.
