Pine scale

Systematic position. The pine scale (lat. Leucaspis pusilla) belongs to the order Hemiptera, family Diaspididae. It is a specialized scale insect species that exclusively targets various pine species, functioning as a sedentary parasite that derives nutrients directly from the host plant's vascular system.

Host plants. This pest primarily attacks various species of the genus Pinus, including Pinus sylvestris and Pinus nigra. It is frequently encountered in forest plantations, ornamental pine gardens, and nurseries, often preferring lower branches where humidity levels are slightly higher and protection from wind is provided.

Biology and life cycle. Leucaspis pusilla typically completes one generation per year. The insect overwinters as second-instar larvae or adult females hidden beneath their protective scale covers. After mating in the spring, the female deposits eggs beneath her scale, and upon hatching, the mobile "crawlers" emerge to settle on fresh needle growth before secreting their own permanent covers.

Nature of damage and harmfulness. The primary damage is caused by the extraction of sap from the pine needles. Symptoms include localized chlorosis, premature yellowing, and needle drop. Chronic infestations result in significant crown thinning, reduced tree growth rates, and increased susceptibility to secondary forest pests, which can lead to the death of the host tree if left untreated.

Control measures. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for controlling this scale insect. Strategies include:

• Promoting tree vigor through proper site selection and silvicultural care.
• Monitoring for crawler emergence to ensure precise timing of insecticide applications.
• Application of systemic insecticides or horticultural oils during the vulnerable crawler stage.
• Preserving natural predators, such as ladybird beetles and parasitic wasps, which often regulate population densities in undisturbed ecosystems.
