Olive scale

The olive scale (Leucaspis riccae) belongs to the Diaspididae family within the order Hemiptera. This scale insect is a specialized pest found in regions cultivating olives. It is characterized by the presence of a tough, protective scale cover that shields the female, which remains sedentary throughout her adult life while extracting sap from the host plant.

The primary host for this pest is the olive tree (Olea europaea). The insects typically colonize leaves, tender shoots, and occasionally fruits. High populations can lead to significant physiological stress in the trees, resulting in reduced vegetative growth and decreased fruit yield, which represents a serious economic challenge for olive growers.

The biology of Leucaspis riccae is tightly linked to the Mediterranean climate. The life cycle comprises eggs, crawler nymphs, and adults. Female scales deposit eggs beneath their protective covers. The crawler stage is critical, as these nymphs are mobile and disperse across the canopy to find suitable spots for permanent attachment and feeding.

The damage caused by the olive scale includes leaf yellowing, deformation, and premature leaf drop due to sap depletion. The feeding sites are often marked by localized chlorosis. Furthermore, the secretion of honeydew by scale insects provides a substrate for sooty mold, which blankets leaves and stems, further hindering photosynthesis and negatively impacting the tree's overall vigor.

Effective management requires an integrated pest management (IPM) approach. Cultural practices such as proper pruning improve airflow and light penetration, making the environment less favorable for the pest. Chemical control is most successful when timed to coincide with the crawler emergence phase, utilizing specialized systemic insecticides or mineral oils to minimize the population without disrupting beneficial insect populations.
