Leucopholis beetle

The genus Leucopholis belongs to the Scarabaeidae family, which is part of the Coleoptera order. These beetles are recognized as significant pests in tropical and subtropical regions. While the adult beetles can cause some damage to foliage, the larvae, often referred to as white grubs, cause the most substantial damage by living underground and feeding on roots.

This pest primarily attacks a wide range of crops, including sugarcane, rubber trees, coconut palms, and various vegetables. Because the larvae remain hidden beneath the soil surface, infestations are often not detected until the crops begin to show visible signs of decline or die back, making them challenging pests to manage effectively.

The biological cycle of Leucopholis involves a long larval stage that can last over a year. Females deposit eggs in soils rich in organic matter. Once hatched, the larvae undergo several instars, feeding voraciously on the root systems of the plants. This period of high consumption directly corresponds with the significant damage caused to the host plants.

Damage to the plant roots prevents the uptake of water and essential nutrients. Infected plants typically exhibit yellowing, stunted growth, and sudden wilting. In severe cases, the root system is completely severed, causing the plants to collapse. This leads to reduced yields and often the total loss of individual plants or sections of the field.

Effective management strategies require an integrated approach. Cultural practices such as deep ploughing help expose larvae to predators and environmental stress. Chemical control involves the application of soil-active insecticides during planting or when larval populations are high. Additionally, the use of biological control agents like entomopathogenic fungi and nematodes is gaining popularity as a sustainable alternative.
