Description
Leucothyreus is a genus of beetles belonging to the family Scarabaeidae and the subfamily Rutelinae. These insects are recognized as significant agricultural pests primarily in Latin American countries, where they cause substantial economic damage to various crops by affecting both root systems and foliage.
The pest targets a wide variety of cultivated plants, including corn, sugarcane, coffee, cacao, and eucalyptus, as well as various fruit and vegetable crops. Adult beetles are primarily foliage feeders, while the larvae inhabit the soil and cause severe damage to the root systems of the plants they infest.
The biology of Leucothyreus involves a complete metamorphosis comprising the egg, three larval instars, pupa, and adult stages. Females lay their eggs in moist, organic-rich soil. The larval stage is the most critical in terms of soil management, as the larvae feed on roots, often causing severe stress to the host plants during their most vulnerable growth stages.
Damage caused by Leucothyreus is often twofold. Adult beetles cause skeletonization of leaves, reducing the plant's photosynthetic capacity. In contrast, subterranean larvae feed on roots, which disrupts water and nutrient uptake. This feeding activity frequently leads to stunted growth, yellowing (chlorosis), and the eventual death of young plants, creating gaps in the crop fields.
Effective control measures focus on an integrated pest management (IPM) strategy. Cultural practices such as crop rotation, soil tillage to disrupt larval development, and the application of granular or liquid insecticides are commonly employed. Biological control, using entomopathogenic fungi such as Metarhizium anisopliae, is increasingly utilized to manage soil-dwelling larval populations in a sustainable manner.
