These beetles, often related to rhinoceros beetles, thrive in warm climates where their larval stages can cause severe agronomic damage to a variety of plant species. The host range of Ligyrus maimon includes several major crops, most notably potatoes, corn, sugar beets, and various vegetables. The larvae are primarily responsible for the damage, as they reside beneath the soil surface and feed extensively on the root systems, underground stems, or tubers of growing crops. This subterranean feeding often goes unnoticed until the plants begin to show signs of wilting.

The biology and lifecycle follow the typical development of scarab beetles. After mating, females deposit eggs in organic-rich soil.
