Lindingaspis

Lindingaspis is a genus of armored scale insects belonging to the family Diaspididae. These specialized plant pests are known for their ability to thrive on various woody hosts, causing significant physiological damage by piercing plant tissues and extracting essential phloem sap.

The host range for Lindingaspis includes a variety of economically important plants such as citrus, olives, laurel, and numerous ornamental tropical species. Because these insects often infest plants in nurseries or greenhouses, they pose a significant threat to the international movement and trade of plant materials.

The biological cycle of Lindingaspis involves egg, nymph (crawler), and adult stages. The crawler stage is the most critical period, as it is the only time the insect is mobile and capable of spreading across the canopy or between plants. Once a crawler settles, it produces a rigid protective shield, making it highly resistant to external environmental factors.

The damage caused by these insects is systemic. As they feed, they inject toxic saliva, which leads to chlorosis, stunted shoot growth, and a reduction in photosynthetic capacity. Heavy infestations often result in severe defoliation, branch dieback, and, in severe cases, the complete death of the host plant.

Effective management requires a multi-faceted approach. Monitoring for crawlers using double-sided sticky tape or visual inspection is the first step. Chemical control often involves the use of horticultural oils to suffocate the insects under their scales, combined with systemic insecticides applied when the crawler population is at its peak.
