Florida scale

Systematic position: The Florida scale (Lindingaspis floridana) is a member of the Diaspididae family, belonging to the suborder Coccidae and the order Hemiptera. This pest is a significant threat in tropical and subtropical agriculture, primarily known for its ability to form dense populations on perennial woody plants.

Host plants: The pest has a very broad host range. It is particularly notorious for damaging citrus species such as orange, lemon, and grapefruit. Beyond citrus, it heavily infests tropical fruits like mango and avocado, and is a frequent pest of ornamental plants, including various species of palms and Ficus.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle involves several stages: egg, crawler (nymph), and adult. Adult females are sessile, protected by a hard, brown, shield-like cover (test). Crawlers represent the only mobile stage and are responsible for the colonization of new parts of the host plant or migration to neighboring plants via wind or contact.

Damage and economic impact: The damage is caused by the extraction of plant sap, which leads to localized toxicity and physiological stress. Symptoms include chlorotic spots on foliage, leaf distortion, reduced photosynthesis, and potential defoliation. In severe cases, the infestation causes branch dieback and reduces the marketability of the fruit crop.

Control measures: Management of the Florida scale requires an integrated pest management (IPM) strategy. Key methods include:

• Strict quarantine measures to prevent the spread of infested nursery stock.
• Regular pruning to remove heavily infested branches and improve insecticide penetration.
• Application of horticultural oils to physically suffocate the scales.
• Targeted use of systemic insecticides during the crawler emergence phase.
