Taxonomic classification
Ross scale (Lindingaspis rossi) is a member of the family Diaspididae, within the order Hemiptera. It is recognized as a significant pest of various evergreen plants in tropical and subtropical regions, as well as in greenhouse environments, where it can cause persistent infestation problems if not managed correctly.

Host plants
This pest is polyphagous and is particularly notorious for attacking citrus species, including lemons, oranges, and grapefruits. Beyond citrus, it displays a broad host range, often infesting ornamental plants such as palms, oleanders, bay laurels, camellias, and various species of Ficus, posing a continuous threat to nursery and botanical collections.

Biology and life cycle
The life cycle involves an egg stage, a mobile crawler stage, and a sedentary adult stage. The adult female remains stationary under a protective, sclerotized scale (cover). After the eggs hatch, the crawlers emerge and migrate to suitable feeding sites on the host plant. Once they settle, they insert their mouthparts, begin to feed, and initiate the formation of their characteristic protective scale.

Damage and pest status
Ross scale feeds by extracting sap from leaves, fruit, and tender shoots. This continuous removal of plant nutrients leads to chlorosis, stunted growth, and leaf drop. When fruit is infested, the presence of the scales and the associated tissue discoloration significantly reduces the marketability of the crop, causing both qualitative and quantitative yield losses.

Control measures
Managing Ross scale requires an integrated approach. Cultural control involves monitoring incoming plant material to prevent introduction and pruning highly infested branches. Chemically, the most vulnerable stage is the crawler phase, which can be controlled with systemic insecticides or narrow-range horticultural oils. Maintaining plant health through proper nutrition and hydration can also improve the plant's tolerance to minor infestations.
