Liogenys

The genus Liogenys belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Scarabaeidae. These insects are recognized as significant soil-borne pests, particularly in South American agricultural landscapes. Their larvae, often referred to as white grubs, pose a serious threat to root systems, undermining the vitality and yield potential of various crops.

This pest is highly polyphagous, attacking a wide range of essential agricultural crops. Documented host plants include soybean, maize, wheat, beans, and sugarcane. The larvae feed aggressively on underground plant parts, often leading to severe thinning of crop stands and substantial economic losses for farmers if left unmanaged.

The life cycle of Liogenys is completed primarily within the soil profile. Adult beetles emerge to mate, and females subsequently lay eggs in the soil. Upon hatching, the larvae go through several developmental instars, feeding on decaying organic matter and, more crucially, the root systems of living crops, before entering the pupal stage underground.

The primary damage caused by these larvae involves feeding on the roots, which disrupts the plant's ability to uptake water and nutrients. This results in stunting, yellowing, and eventually the death of the plants. Seedlings are particularly susceptible, as a single larva can destroy a small plant within a very short period of time.

Effective management requires an integrated approach focusing on both preventative and corrective strategies. Control tactics include the following:

• Soil-applied granular or liquid insecticides during the planting process.
• Implementation of proper crop rotation to disrupt the insect's life cycle.
