The beetle typically infests trees that are already suffering from environmental stress, such as drought, frost injury, or poor soil conditions. By weakening the tree's defensive systems, these factors make the bark and sub-cortical tissues attractive for the beetle to start its colonization and reproductive processes.

The larvae then hatch and tunnel through the cambium and phloem, creating complex feeding galleries that disrupt the vascular transport of water and nutrients.
