Liparus

Systematic position: Liparus is a genus of beetles belonging to the family Curculionidae (true weevils) within the order Coleoptera. These insects are recognized as significant pests in various agro-ecosystems, specifically targeting certain families of plants for their life cycle and nutritional needs.

Host plants: The primary hosts of Liparus are plants within the Brassicaceae family, commonly known as the mustard or cabbage family. This includes important agricultural crops such as radishes, various cabbages, turnips, and rutabagas, all of which are susceptible to damage during different growth stages.

Biology and life cycle: The insect undergoes a complete metamorphosis. Adult beetles typically overwinter in the soil or beneath dense plant debris. When temperatures rise in the spring, they emerge to feed. The females lay eggs in the soil near the base of the host plants, ensuring that the emerging larvae have immediate access to the root system for nourishment.

Character of damage and severity: While adult weevils cause foliage loss through leaf-edge feeding, the most severe damage is caused by the larval stage. Larvae bore into the roots, disrupting nutrient and water uptake. This often results in stunted plant growth, wilting, and in severe cases, the complete collapse and death of the infested plant.

Management and control measures: Controlling Liparus requires an integrated pest management (IPM) approach to be successful:

• Practicing crop rotation by avoiding planting Brassicaceae in the same area for at least three seasons.
• Eliminating wild cruciferous weeds that provide alternative food sources for the pests.
• Utilizing deep fall tillage to disrupt the soil and destroy overwintering pupae and larvae.
• Applying appropriate insecticides when beetle activity is high, specifically targeting the period before egg-laying occurs.
