Annual bluegrass weevil
Listronotus maculicollis
Description
The annual bluegrass weevil (Listronotus maculicollis) is a member of the Coleoptera order and the Curculionidae family. It is widely recognized as a devastating pest of managed turfgrasses, particularly those composed of annual bluegrass (Poa annua), frequently causing severe damage to high-maintenance areas like golf course fairways and greens.
While the insect primarily targets annual bluegrass, it can affect other grass species under certain conditions. The larvae pose the most significant threat, as they bore into the stems of the grass and feed on the crown, effectively killing the plant from within and destroying the turf density required for professional sports surfaces.
The life cycle of the insect consists of eggs, larvae, pupae, and adults. Adults overwinter in protected areas such as roughs or surrounding landscapes, emerging in the spring when temperatures rise. After mating, females deposit eggs onto the grass blades or sheaths, and the hatching larvae immediately move toward the crown to initiate their feeding cycle.
The damage is often characterized by thinning of the turf and the appearance of irregular dead patches that can be easily lifted from the soil due to the destruction of the root and crown systems. These patches often expand rapidly, causing significant aesthetic and functional issues for golf courses and athletic fields if left unmanaged.
Management strategies rely heavily on Integrated Pest Management (IPM) practices. Key control measures include:
- Monitoring for adult emergence using specialized traps.
- Applying insecticides at the correct larval stage for maximum efficiency.
- Cultural practices like core aeration to reduce thatch buildup.
- Maintaining optimal moisture levels to help grass recover.
- Using plant growth regulators to decrease the attractiveness of the grass tissue.
