Description

The Lixus acutipennis weevil is an insect species belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae. It is recognized as a specialized agricultural pest primarily affecting plants of the Amaranthaceae family, with sugar beet, table beet, and fodder beet being the most economically impacted crops.

The life cycle of this beetle begins after overwintering in the soil or under plant debris. Upon the arrival of spring, the adults emerge and begin feeding on plant foliage. Following mating, females deposit their eggs by boring holes into the petioles or stems of the host plants, providing their larvae with a safe internal environment to feed and develop.

The larvae are responsible for the primary damage, as they create internal tunnels within the stems and root collars. This mining activity disrupts the transport of water and nutrients within the plant, which leads to stunted growth, reduced root size, and a significant decrease in the overall sugar content, severely affecting harvest quality.

Visually, the presence of Lixus acutipennis can be detected by wilting leaves, yellowing foliage, and swellings on the stalks where eggs were laid. If left unmanaged, the infestation can lead to significant gaps in the crop stand and reduced yields, particularly in years with favorable conditions for the pest's reproduction.
