Description
The Algiers weevil (Lixus algirus) is a member of the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae. It is recognized as a significant pest in agricultural settings, particularly affecting crops within the Asteraceae family, with sunflower being a primary target for this insect.
The biology of Lixus algirus is closely tied to the host plant's life cycle. The adults overwinter in soil debris or protected areas, emerging in the spring to feed on foliage. Following mating, females lay eggs inside the stems of the host plants, which facilitates the larval stage's development inside the plant tissue.
The damage caused by the larvae is particularly destructive because they burrow tunnels through the internal tissues of the stem. This structural damage disrupts the plant's vascular system, hindering the transport of water and nutrients, which eventually leads to stunted growth, wilting, and increased susceptibility to lodging.
Crop loss is significant in areas with high pest density. Beyond the physical damage caused by larval mining, the exit holes created by adults provide entry points for various fungal and bacterial pathogens. These secondary infections can cause rotting, which often results in the premature death of the infested stalks.
