The beet stem weevil (Lixus ascanii) is a significant agricultural pest belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae. It is widely recognized for its negative impact on sugar beet production, causing direct physical damage to the plant structure during the critical growth phases.
This pest primarily attacks plants within the Amaranthaceae family, with a strong preference for sugar beets, fodder beets, and table beets. Furthermore, the insect utilizes wild weeds like goosefoot and orache as alternative hosts during the early season, which allows its population to thrive before reaching cultivated fields.
The biological development of Lixus ascanii follows a univoltine pattern, meaning it completes one generation per year. Adults overwinter in protected spots, emerging in spring to feed before mating. Females subsequently deposit eggs into the leaf stalks or the crown of the beet. The larvae hatch and immediately bore into the plant stems to feed on the internal tissues.
The damage caused by this pest is primarily internal. Larval feeding galleries disrupt the flow of nutrients and water from the leaves to the root, which causes premature wilting, yellowing, and eventual plant death. Furthermore, infected plants often lose their structural integrity and are more susceptible to secondary fungal infections or mechanical damage during harvesting operations.
Management strategies focus on a combination of cultural and chemical interventions. Essential practices include crop rotation, the destruction of host weeds in field margins, and deep autumn plowing to reduce overwintering adult populations.
