Burdock weevil

The burdock weevil (Lixus bardanae) is a beetle belonging to the Curculionidae family within the order Coleoptera. This species is characterized by an elongated body shape and a long, slender rostrum typical of true weevils, which allows them to effectively bore into plant tissues for feeding and oviposition.

The primary hosts for this insect are plants from the Asteraceae family. While it is commonly associated with burdock (Arctium), it may also attack other related plant species. In agricultural settings, it can potentially affect commercial crops that share similar morphological characteristics, making it a pest of concern in certain environments.

The biological cycle follows a complete metamorphosis: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Adults overwinter in the soil or under plant debris. Upon the arrival of spring temperatures, they emerge to feed on foliage before mating. Females subsequently deposit eggs directly into the stems or petioles of host plants, where the larvae will later emerge and develop.

The main damage is caused by the larvae, which tunnel inside the stems of the plants. This internal feeding disrupts the transport of nutrients and water, leading to stunted growth, wilting, and increased susceptibility to secondary infections such as fungal rots. In cases of high infestation, the structural integrity of the plant is severely compromised.

Effective management and protection measures focus on the following strategies:

• Mechanical destruction of host weeds, such as wild burdock, surrounding the fields.
• Deep soil cultivation (plowing) in the autumn to disrupt overwintering sites.
• Crop rotation to reduce the continuous availability of suitable host plants.
• Chemical control using systemic insecticides applied during the peak emergence of adults in spring.
