Description
The beet stem weevil (Lixus juncii) is a member of the Curculionidae family within the Coleoptera order. It is recognized as a specialized pest that primarily targets cultivated and wild plants within the Amaranthaceae family, posing a significant risk to sugar beet production in various regions.
The primary hosts for this insect are sugar, fodder, and table beets. In addition to these crops, the pest finds refuge on common weed species such as Chenopodium album and other related goosefoot plants, which provide a bridge for the pest population before the emergence of the beet crop.
The life cycle of Lixus juncii involves overwintering as adults in the soil or under debris. Once temperatures rise in the spring, the beetles emerge to feed on foliage. Mating occurs shortly thereafter, and females deposit eggs into individual cavities carved into the petioles or stems of the host plants.
The damage caused by this insect is significant. Larvae hatch inside the plant tissue and feed on the pith of the stems and petioles. This internal tunneling leads to structural weakness, premature wilting, and reduced plant vigor. In severe infestations, the yield of the beet root is drastically reduced due to impaired nutrient transport.
Effective management requires an integrated approach. Cultural practices such as deep autumn plowing to bury overwintering sites and strict sanitation to eliminate alternative weed hosts are essential. When pest thresholds are exceeded, targeted applications of systemic or contact insecticides during the adult migration phase are recommended to prevent egg-laying.
