Description
The mallow weevil (Lixus mucidus) is a beetle species belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae. It is recognized as a specific pest that primarily targets plants within the Chenopodiaceae family, frequently causing economic losses in agricultural regions where these crops are grown.
The host range of Lixus mucidus centers around sugar beet, fodder beet, and various wild species of the Amaranthaceae and Chenopodiaceae families. These plants provide essential nutrients for both the adult stage, which feeds on foliage, and the larval stage, which develops internally within the plant tissues.
The biology of this pest involves a single generation per year. Adults typically overwinter in the soil or protected plant debris. As temperatures rise in spring, they emerge to feed on leaves before mating and ovipositing. The larvae hatch and burrow into the stems, creating galleries that persist throughout their development.
The damage caused by the mallow weevil is twofold. Adults create characteristic feeding holes in the leaf blades, while the larvae feed internally within the stems. This internal feeding weakens the plant structure, stunts growth, and can significantly decrease the overall vigor and yield potential of the crop.
