Lopholeucaspis

Lopholeucaspis is a genus of armored scale insects belonging to the family Diaspididae, order Hemiptera. These insects are characterized by their hard, protective shields that cover their bodies, providing significant protection against environmental stressors and many traditional contact pesticides. Because they often blend in with the bark of host plants, they are frequently overlooked until the infestation becomes severe.

The host range of this pest is diverse, affecting numerous ornamental and fruit-bearing tree species. It is commonly found on various species of Malus, Pyrus, Prunus, and diverse ornamental shrubs. In agricultural settings, it can cause significant economic losses in nurseries and orchards, especially when the insect is introduced into new geographic areas where natural predators are absent.

The life cycle involves multiple stages, with the crawlers being the most mobile and vulnerable stage. Females remain stationary under their scales for their entire adult lives, laying eggs that hatch into crawlers. These crawlers then seek out suitable locations on branches, twigs, or leaves to settle down and begin feeding, which facilitates their spread through wind or transport of infected nursery stock.

The damage caused by Lopholeucaspis is primarily due to the sap-sucking activity of the insects. By removing large quantities of plant nutrients, they weaken the host, leading to reduced vigor, chlorosis, stunted growth, and in cases of heavy infestation, the dieback of branches. Long-term health of the host is compromised, making it susceptible to pathogens and harsh winter conditions.
