Description
Cockerell scale (Lopholeucaspis cockerelli) is a dangerous sap-sucking pest belonging to the Diaspididae family within the order Hemiptera. This pest is characterized by its small size and the unique, elongated shape of its protective cover (scale), which allows it to camouflage effectively on the bark of host trees and shrubs.
The pest is highly polyphagous, attacking a wide range of woody and shrubby species. It is most frequently found on citrus trees, palms, ficus, mango, and various ornamental plants grown both in open ground in warm climates and in indoor environments or greenhouse conditions.
The life cycle of this scale is closely tied to environmental conditions. Females are sessile and spend their entire life beneath the protective cover, where they lay their eggs. The first instar nymphs, known as crawlers, represent the only mobile stage capable of moving along the plant to select optimal feeding sites, after which they settle down and begin to secrete their own protective shield.
Damage is caused by the systemic extraction of plant sap, which leads to general weakening. At the sites of infestation, necrotic spots often develop on the bark; the bark may crack, and in cases of heavy infestation, symptoms include premature yellowing and leaf drop, stunted shoot growth, and an overall decline in plant vigor.
Control measures require an integrated approach: the use of systemic insecticides, applications of horticultural oils during the dormant season, and strict quarantine protocols for imported plant material. Effective management also involves pruning heavily infested branches and conducting regular monitoring of plant collections to identify and treat early outbreaks.
