Description
Lopholeucaspis excoecariae is a significant agricultural and ornamental pest belonging to the family Diaspididae (armored scales) within the order Hemiptera. This insect is primarily recognized for its ability to create protective covers, making it highly resilient against environmental stressors and many conventional pesticide treatments.
The pest primarily targets plant species such as Excoecaria, though it poses a broader threat to various exotic and ornamental woody plants in both greenhouse and outdoor environments. Its presence is often overlooked until the infestation reaches a level where visible decline in plant health becomes apparent.
The biological cycle consists of eggs, mobile crawler stages, and sessile adult females. The crawlers are responsible for the primary dispersal of the population, actively moving to new feeding sites before settling down to develop their characteristic armor. The lifecycle allows for multiple generations per year, especially in warm climates.
Damage is caused by the extraction of phloem sap, which deprives the plant of essential nutrients. Symptoms include localized chlorosis, leaf drop, and the stunting of branch growth. In severe cases, the heavy buildup of scales on the bark can cause tissue desiccation and necrosis, severely weakening the structural integrity of the host.

This includes strict phytosanitary measures, regular inspection of plant stems and undersides of leaves, and the application of systemic insecticides during the crawler emergence period. Pruning heavily infested parts of the plant and biological control agents can also be integrated into the management plan.
