Description
The Japanese maple scale (Lopholeucaspis japonica) is an armored scale insect belonging to the family Diaspididae. It is a significant polyphagous pest that poses a severe threat to a wide range of woody plants, including various fruit trees, ornamental trees, and shrubs, often spreading through infested nursery stock.
This pest infests numerous host plants such as apple, pear, peach, plum, persimmon, maple, and dogwood. It is particularly known for its ability to settle on the bark of trunks and branches, creating dense, white, oyster-shaped scales that can easily be mistaken for natural bark patterns, making early detection difficult.
Regarding its biology, the Japanese maple scale typically undergoes one or two generations per year depending on the climate. Overwintering occurs primarily as second-instar nymphs on the bark. As temperatures rise in spring, these nymphs mature into adults. Females lay eggs under their protective tests, which hatch into mobile crawlers that disperse to new feeding sites on the host.
The primary damage caused by this insect involves the extraction of plant sap. Constant feeding leads to a decline in plant vigor, branch dieback, and in severe cases, the death of the plant. Furthermore, the presence of the scale significantly reduces the aesthetic and commercial value of ornamental and fruit-bearing trees due to bark cracking and overall decline.

- Pruning and destroying heavily infested branches to reduce population density;
- Application of systemic insecticides or contact sprays specifically timed during the crawler stage;
