Lemon scale

Lopholeucaspis limoniae

Description

The lemon scale (Lopholeucaspis limoniae) is a significant scale insect pest belonging to the Diaspididae family (Order: Hemiptera). It is primarily recognized as a specialized threat to various citrus species and several other evergreen ornamental plants, often causing substantial damage in both nursery environments and open orchards.

Host plants commonly affected by this species include citrus trees like lemons and oranges, as well as woody shrubs in tropical and subtropical regions. The pest typically colonizes the bark of branches and the underside of leaves, where they establish colonies that can rapidly expand if not detected early.

The biology of L. limoniae centers on the protective waxy covering produced by the female, which shields it from environmental stress and many pesticide applications. The insect progresses through a nymphal stage (crawlers) before settling permanently. Under optimal climate conditions, they complete multiple generations, making control efforts particularly challenging.

The damage caused by these insects is primarily due to sap extraction. By piercing plant tissues, the insects deplete vital nutrients, which leads to leaf yellowing, necrosis, stunted shoot growth, and a general decline in plant vigor. Heavy infestations often result in severe limb dieback and can eventually cause the total death of the host plant.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for controlling the lemon scale. Key strategies include:

  • Rigorous monitoring and inspection of imported plant material.
  • Pruning and destroying heavily infested branches.
  • Application of systemic insecticides that target the insect through the plant's vascular system.
  • Strategic use of horticultural oils to suffocate the insects by disrupting their respiration.
