Systematic position: Lygaeus familiaris is a species belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Lygaeidae. Often referred to as a seed bug, it is characterized by its distinct black and red patterns, which often serve as a warning sign to potential predators in the field or garden environment.
Host crops: While primarily feeding on wild species in the Asteraceae and Lamiaceae families, this pest can occasionally migrate to agricultural lands. It is known to affect various berry crops, particularly strawberries, and may feed on the seeds and developing fruits of certain vegetables, leading to yield losses.
Biology and life cycle: The insect overwinters as an adult in sheltered habitats such as leaf litter, bark crevices, or dry grass. Once temperatures rise in the spring, they emerge and mate. Females deposit eggs in the soil near the host plants. The nymphs go through five developmental stages (instars) before reaching maturity, actively feeding on plant sap throughout the process.
Damage and harmfulness: The primary harm is caused by adults and nymphs piercing the plant tissues with their proboscis to suck sap. This feeding behavior causes discoloration, stunted fruit growth, and deformation. Furthermore, the feeding sites provide entry points for secondary pathogens like fungi and bacteria, which further degrade the fruit quality and market value.
Protection measures: Management strategies focus on sanitation and physical barriers. Removing debris and weeds around field edges significantly reduces overwintering populations. Crop rotation and maintaining soil health can also help mitigate the impact. When chemical control is necessary, targeted insecticides should be applied carefully to minimize impact on beneficial species, always following label instructions and pre-harvest intervals.
