Small milkweed bug

The small milkweed bug (Lygaeus kalmii) belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Lygaeidae. While primarily known for its association with milkweed plants (Asclepias), it can occasionally act as an opportunistic pest in agricultural systems. Understanding its biology is essential for farmers who encounter these insects near field boundaries or in specific crop rotations.

This insect species can feed on a variety of agricultural crops, including legumes and cereals, particularly when its primary host plants are scarce. While it typically does not reach high population densities that threaten large-scale harvests, it can affect the overall quality and vitality of crops. The economic impact is often most noticeable in areas bordering wild habitats or unmanaged field margins.

The life cycle of Lygaeus kalmii involves incomplete metamorphosis, progressing through egg, nymph, and adult stages. Nymphs go through five distinct instars, all of which feed on plant sap. Adults are easily recognized by their distinct black and red patterns. They typically overwinter as adults in protected areas such as leaf litter, crop debris, or underneath the bark of trees, emerging when temperatures rise in the spring.

Damage to plants is caused by the insect's piercing-sucking mouthparts. By feeding on plant sap, the bug drains nutrients and injects enzymes that cause localized necrosis, stunted growth, and developmental deformation. In seed-producing crops, feeding on developing seeds can significantly reduce viability and yield potential, making this pest a concern for seed stock producers.
