Avocado weevil
Macrocopturus aguacatae
Description
Taxonomic position. The avocado weevil, scientifically known as Macrocopturus aguacatae, belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae. It is a significant pest primarily affecting avocado plantations in parts of Latin America, known for its cryptic life cycle that makes control efforts challenging.
Host plants and damage symptoms. The primary host for Macrocopturus aguacatae is the avocado tree (Persea americana). Both adults and larvae cause damage. Adults feed on young twigs and fruits, creating puncture marks. However, the larvae are the most destructive stage, boring into the fruit pulp or branches, which typically leads to premature fruit drop and structural damage to the tree's vascular system.
Biology and life cycle. The life cycle comprises egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. Females lay eggs in small pits excavated in the epidermis of fruit or bark. Upon hatching, larvae burrow deep into the plant tissue, where they feed and eventually pupate. The duration of each life stage depends heavily on temperature and humidity, allowing for continuous generations in tropical climates.
Economic impact. The infestation leads to severe economic losses for avocado growers. Damaged fruits are often unmarketable due to unsightly puncture marks and internal decay caused by larval tunneling. Furthermore, heavy infestations in twigs can lead to dieback, reducing the canopy's overall productivity and making trees more susceptible to other environmental stresses or pathogens.
Control measures. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for managing this weevil effectively:
- Sanitary practices, including the removal and destruction of fallen or infested fruits to break the life cycle.
- Pruning of infested branches to reduce local population density.
- Monitoring using pheromone traps to time insecticide applications accurately.
- Applying targeted systemic insecticides during peak adult activity periods, while adhering to pre-harvest intervals.
