Macrodactylus uniformis is a species of beetle belonging to the family Scarabaeidae within the order Coleoptera. This insect is recognized as a significant agricultural pest in regions where it occurs, often causing severe damage due to the gregarious feeding behavior of the adult beetles.
The host range of this pest is extensive, encompassing various deciduous fruit trees, grapevines, ornamental flowers, and certain vegetable crops. These beetles show a distinct preference for young, tender tissues, making nursery stock and newly emerged crops particularly susceptible to infestation.
The life cycle involves an egg stage, several larval instars in the soil, a pupal stage, and the adult phase. Adults emerge in spring or early summer to feed and mate. Larvae, known as grubs, develop in the soil, often taking a significant amount of time to reach maturity, depending on ambient soil temperatures and moisture availability.
