Macrodactylus variipes

Systematic position. Macrodactylus variipes is a member of the order Coleoptera, belonging to the family Scarabaeidae and the subfamily Melolonthinae. It is a well-known genus in the Americas, often referred to as a type of rose chafer or rose beetle, which can reach pest status when environmental conditions favor their population explosion.

Crops damaged. This insect is highly polyphagous, meaning it feeds on a wide array of host plants. The primary crops at risk include maize (corn), various legumes, grapevines, and a variety of fruit trees like peaches and plums. The beetles exhibit a particular preference for flowers and young foliage, often clustering on plants in large numbers.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle consists of four stages: egg, larva (grub), pupa, and adult. Eggs are deposited in the soil, particularly in areas rich in organic matter. The larvae, which are C-shaped grubs, remain underground, feeding primarily on organic matter and living roots of host plants. The adult stage occurs above ground, where mating and feeding take place, typically synchronizing with the bloom of host plants.

Nature of damage and harmfulness. The damage is two-fold. Adults cause significant economic loss by skeletonizing leaves and consuming floral parts, which prevents fruit set and weakens the plant's structural integrity. Meanwhile, larvae feeding on the root system disrupt water and nutrient uptake, leading to stunted growth, wilting, and in severe cases, the death of young seedlings and established crops.

Protection measures. Effective management requires an integrated pest management (IPM) strategy. Cultivation techniques such as deep plowing help expose and destroy larvae in the soil. Chemical control involves the timely application of systemic or contact insecticides during the adult emergence phase. Monitoring populations with light traps or pheromone baits is essential to determine the correct timing for interventions.
