Taxonomic position: The bronze apple weevil (Magdalis aenescens) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae. It is a significant pest of orchard ecosystems, primarily known for its ability to damage the structural integrity of young woody branches.
Host plants: This insect primarily attacks pome fruits, such as apples and pears. Stone fruit species, including plums and cherries, are also potential hosts. The beetle is frequently found on various wild rosaceous shrubs, which serve as reservoirs for infestation in nearby commercial or domestic orchards.
Biology and life cycle: Adult beetles emerge during the spring, coinciding with the bud break of host trees. After feeding, females lay eggs beneath the bark of thin branches.
