Host plants: The primary host is the Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris). This insect targets young plantations, typically trees aged between 5 and 20 years. Weakened trees, whether due to drought, poor soil quality, or mechanical damage, are significantly more susceptible to successful infestation by this weevil.
Biology and life cycle: Adults emerge in late spring or early summer to feed on tender shoots and needles. After mating, females deposit eggs beneath the bark. The larvae hatch and bore into the cambium layer, feeding on tissues and creating characteristic galleries. The pest typically overwinters as a larva within the wood, undergoing pupation the following spring.
Nature of damage and pest status: The larvae are responsible for the main damage as they disrupt the vascular system of the branches, often causing dieback of terminal shoots. Affected branches eventually turn brown and die. Severe infestations can result in stunted growth, tree deformation, and increased vulnerability to secondary infections and subsequent insect attacks.
