Description

The Elm weevil (Magdalis armigera) is a beetle belonging to the family Curculionidae (order Coleoptera). It is a well-known pest that specifically targets elm trees, making it a subject of significant interest in arboriculture and forest management due to the potential damage it inflicts on host plants.

This species primarily infests trees of the genus Ulmus. While the adults feed on the leaves and young shoots of the host tree, the larvae represent the more damaging stage, as they tunnel directly under the bark, disrupting the normal physiological processes of the tree's transport systems.

The biology of the Elm weevil follows a univoltine life cycle. Larvae overwinter beneath the bark, providing protection from harsh winter conditions. As temperatures rise in spring, they pupate, and the new generation of adults emerges in early summer to feed and eventually mate to lay eggs in the bark crevices of the host.

The damage caused by this pest is primarily internal. The larvae construct extensive galleries beneath the bark, which effectively girdle the tree or branches, leading to dieback. External signs of an infestation include the presence of numerous small, circular exit holes on the trunk and limbs, which are created by the beetles as they emerge.
