Elm weevil

The elm weevil (Magdalis barbita) is a specialized pest belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae. This beetle is an obligate xylophage, meaning its life cycle is strictly dependent on tree species within the Ulmaceae family, particularly the elm (Ulmus), where it causes significant damage to both forest and landscape trees.

The pest primarily targets weakened, stressed, or recently felled trees. It prefers branches and stems with thin bark, making it a particular threat to young plantations, saplings, and ornamental elm cultivars in urban environments. Its ability to infest stressed trees often leads to rapid population buildup in local areas.

The biology of the elm weevil is characterized by a univoltine (single-generation) life cycle. Adults emerge in the spring during the sap flow season and begin feeding on young shoots, buds, and bark. Following mating, females lay eggs under the bark. The larvae then bore complex galleries, which expand over time, disrupting the tree's phloem and cambium layer and effectively cutting off nutrient circulation.

Visible symptoms of infestation include numerous small, circular exit holes in the bark, resembling buckshot patterns. The tree often shows signs of crown thinning, branch dieback, and yellowing foliage. In cases of severe infestation, the damage caused by the larvae, combined with subsequent infections by secondary pathogens, can prove fatal to the host tree.

Control measures are primarily preventive and focused on forest hygiene and maintaining tree health:

• Prompt removal and destruction of infested wood before the new generation of adults emerges.
• Regular monitoring of elm stands during the spring to identify early stages of colonization.
• Enhancing tree vigor through proper irrigation, fertilization, and site management to reduce susceptibility.
• Selective application of insecticides to trunks and main branches during the adult activity window if population levels reach an economic threshold.
