Description

Systematic position: The elm weevil (Magdalis frontalis) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae. It is a well-known xylophagous insect that plays a significant role in the degradation of elm tree health in various woodland and urban environments.

Host plants: The primary host plants for this species are elm trees (genus Ulmus). While healthy trees can withstand low levels of infestation, those already under stress from drought, mechanical injury, or other pathogens are particularly susceptible to severe colonization by this pest.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle is characterized by four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The overwintering usually occurs at the larval stage within the bark galleries. In the spring, the larvae pupate, and the newly emerged adults bite through the bark to feed on foliage and young shoots before mating and laying eggs for the next generation.

Damage and pest significance: The damage is twofold: adults cause defoliation and tissue scarring, while the larval galleries severely interrupt the flow of nutrients in the cambium layer. This activity often leads to crown dieback, reduced vitality of the tree, and in severe cases, the eventual death of the affected specimen if left unmanaged.

Protection measures: Management strategies focus on sanitation and chemical intervention. Removal of heavily infested branches during the dormant season is critical to reduce the local population. Additionally, systematic monitoring and the use of targeted insecticide applications during the adult emergence phase can provide effective control in ornamental and managed forestry settings.
