Pine twig weevil

Systematic position: The pine twig weevil (Magdalis gracilis) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae. It is a specialized insect species that targets coniferous trees, particularly pines, and is widely distributed across forests in Europe and parts of Asia, where it plays a role in forest health dynamics.

Host plants and damage: The primary host for this pest is the Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris). Adult weevils feed on the bark of young twigs, creating feeding pits. The damage caused by the larvae is far more severe, as they bore into the inner bark and cambium layer, creating galleries that disrupt vascular tissues and eventually cause branch dieback or tree death.

Biology and lifecycle: The lifecycle of Magdalis gracilis is closely synchronized with the phenology of its host tree. Adults emerge in spring to feed and mate. Eggs are laid under the bark of stressed or weakened trees. The larvae develop throughout the summer, creating extensive tunnel systems under the bark, and overwinter as mature larvae or pupae before emerging as adults the following spring.

Pest impact: This weevil is considered a significant threat to weakened pine stands and young plantations. The feeding activity of larvae significantly weakens the tree, making it more susceptible to secondary infestations by bark beetles or wood-boring insects. In nursery settings or young forest stands, heavy infestation can lead to significant economic losses and structural damage.

Control measures: Integrated management strategies are essential to mitigate the impact of the pine twig weevil:

• Prompt removal and disposal of infested, damaged, or dead trees during sanitary cuttings.
• Proper disposal of slash and wood debris to eliminate breeding sites.
• Application of registered insecticides in nurseries during the adult flight period.
• Promoting forest vigor through appropriate thinning and favoring mixed-species stands to prevent outbreaks.
