Systematic position: The Himalayan weevil (Magdalis himalayana) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae. This species is native to mountainous regions and represents a significant group of wood-boring insects that can impact both natural forest stands and managed agricultural landscapes.

Host plants: The pest primarily targets various conifer species and some hardwood trees. It shows a preference for stressed or weakened trees, using the bark and cambium layers as a food source for its larvae, while adults feed on the soft tissues of new shoots and buds, causing localized damage to the tree canopy.

Biology and life cycle: Magdalis himalayana undergoes a complete metamorphosis, consisting of egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. The overwintering phase typically occurs in the larval stage under the bark. As temperatures rise in spring, the adults emerge to feed and reproduce, completing one generation per year depending on the climatic conditions of the habitat.

Nature of damage and economic impact: The damage is twofold: adults consume foliage and buds, while larvae create extensive galleries beneath the bark. These galleries destroy the phloem and vascular tissues, leading to nutrient deprivation, branch dieback, and potentially the death of the tree if infestations are severe and sustained over several seasons.

Control measures: Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for controlling Magdalis himalayana. Recommended practices include:

• Maintaining tree vigor through proper irrigation and balanced fertilization to prevent infestation.
• Prompt removal and destruction of infested timber to reduce the population density in the area.
