The beetles and their larvae infest both young shoots and older branches, preferring trees that are already suffering from environmental stress, poor soil conditions, or mechanical damage, although healthy trees can also be affected.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle is synchronized with the seasonal growth of the host tree. Adults emerge in spring to feed on the tender bark of young shoots. After mating, females deposit eggs beneath the bark surface. The resulting larvae tunnel into the cambium and phloem layers, where they feed and complete their development before pupating within the host tissue.

Nature of damage and pest status: The larval feeding activity creates galleries that disrupt the vascular system of the branches. This leads to the disruption of water and nutrient transport, which causes branches to wither, turn yellow, and eventually die. Heavy infestations can lead to crown thinning and, in severe cases, the decline of the entire tree if the infestation reaches the main trunk.
