Description

Biology and lifecycle. The lifecycle is synchronized with the seasonal growth of pines. Adults emerge during the spring to feed on young needles and thin bark. Females subsequently oviposit into the bark, and the developing larvae create tunnels within the woody tissue, which disrupts the transport of nutrients.

Nature of damage. The species is named for the distinctive pattern of small holes, resembling needle perforations, that it leaves on the bark surface.
