Pine twig weevil

Magdalis proxima, commonly known as the pine twig weevil, is a member of the Curculionidae family within the Coleoptera order. This insect is primarily recognized as a specialized pest affecting coniferous forests, with a distinct preference for various pine species across temperate regions.

The host range of this weevil includes Pinus sylvestris and other related conifers. It targets younger trees and branches of older individuals. It frequently colonizes trees that have been compromised by environmental stressors, such as drought, poor soil quality, or mechanical damage.

The life cycle of the species is univoltine, meaning it completes one generation per year. Adults emerge from overwintering sites during the spring months. Females deposit eggs in the bark of twigs or stems. The larvae feed beneath the bark, constructing galleries that severely disrupt the tree's vascular system.

The damage caused by the larvae results in the wilting and subsequent death of the affected twigs or upper shoots. Foliage discoloration is a primary symptom, followed by needle shedding. Heavy infestations significantly weaken the host tree, making it susceptible to secondary attacks by wood-boring insects and pathogenic fungi.
