The Eastern tent caterpillar (Malacosoma americanum) is a prominent member of the Lasiocampidae family within the order Lepidoptera. This moth species is widely recognized as a significant defoliator, known for its distinct social behavior and the large, silken tents constructed by larval colonies on host trees.
The primary host plants for this pest include various species of the Rosaceae family. They are frequently found infesting wild cherry, apple, peach, and plum trees. While they primarily feed on trees in woodland margins, they can easily migrate to cultivated orchards, where they cause substantial aesthetic and economic damage.
Biological development of the Eastern tent caterpillar is univoltine. Eggs are overwintered in dark, varnished masses on small twigs. Larvae emerge in early spring to coincide with the bud break of host plants. They are gregarious, developing through several instars within large silken webs that protect them from predators and environmental extremes.
