The lappet moth (Malacosoma brisotti) is a member of the Lasiocampidae family within the order Lepidoptera. This species is recognized as a specialized pest that exhibits significant activity in specific climatic regions, feeding primarily on the foliage of various woody shrubs and trees.
The pest predominantly targets pome and stone fruit crops, including apple, pear, plum, and apricot. Occasionally, it is found on wild Rosaceae species, which allows the insect to establish persistent breeding populations in hedgerows and adjacent orchard environments.
The biological life cycle of this insect includes the egg, larva (caterpillar), pupa, and adult stages. They typically overwinter as formed larvae protected within egg mass coatings or dense silken nests. As spring temperatures rise, the larvae begin active feeding through several instars, culminating in pupation within sturdy cocoons attached to tree branches.
