Description
The Ground lackey (Malacosoma castrense) is a species of moth belonging to the family Lasiocampidae, order Lepidoptera. It is a well-known pest in various regions of Europe and Asia, where its larvae are capable of causing significant ecological and economic impact when environmental conditions favor their mass reproduction.
The larvae of this moth are polyphagous, feeding on a wide variety of plants. They primarily target wild herbs such as Euphorbia, Artemisia, and various meadow plants. However, in agricultural settings, they are known to damage forage crops like clover, lucerne, and occasionally cereals or the foliage of young fruit trees growing near infested grasslands.
The biological cycle consists of one generation per year. The species typically overwinters as young larvae within the egg mass or as first-instar larvae under protective silk webbing. In early spring, the caterpillars emerge or resume activity to feed on emerging vegetation, growing rapidly and molting through several instars before pupating in late spring or early summer.
Damage caused by the Ground lackey is primarily linked to the gregarious feeding behavior of the larvae. Young caterpillars construct communal silk nests, which provide protection. As they mature, they disperse and consume large amounts of leaf tissue, often leading to total defoliation of host plants, which severely weakens the plant and reduces overall yield quality and quantity.
