Pacific tent caterpillar

The Pacific tent caterpillar (Malacosoma constrictum) is a species of moth within the Lasiocampidae family, order Lepidoptera. Native to the western regions of North America, this insect is well-known for its periodic population outbreaks which can result in significant defoliation of various deciduous tree species, particularly within forest and orchard environments.

The primary host plants for this species are various oak trees. However, they are also known to feed on other hardwood trees and shrubs when preferred food sources are scarce. The feeding activity of large colonies can lead to severe stress for host plants, especially when consecutive years of defoliation occur, eventually weakening the trees and making them susceptible to other environmental stressors.

The life cycle of this species is univoltine, meaning there is only one generation per year. The insect overwinters in the egg stage, with eggs laid in distinct, hardened masses encircling small twigs. In early spring, the larvae hatch in sync with the leaf development of host trees. These larvae are gregarious, constructing silken tents where they congregate during rest periods.

Larval feeding causes extensive leaf damage, starting with skeletonization and progressing to the consumption of entire leaves. In severe infestations, trees may be completely stripped of foliage. While mature, healthy trees can often recover from single defoliation events, younger or previously stressed trees may suffer branch dieback or total mortality following repeated attacks.

Management strategies focus on cultural and biological controls. Pruning and destroying egg masses during the dormant winter season is a highly effective mechanical method. For larger areas or significant infestations, applying biological insecticides based on Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) is recommended, as it effectively targets the larvae while minimizing impact on beneficial insects and the surrounding ecosystem.
