Lappet moth (Malacosoma lutescens)

Systematic position: Malacosoma lutescens is a member of the order Lepidoptera and the family Lasiocampidae, commonly known as lappet moths. This species is recognized as a significant defoliator, capable of causing localized outbreaks that can strip foliage from both forest and orchard trees.

Host plants: The pest targets a variety of deciduous trees and shrubs. It frequently infests fruit trees such as apple, pear, and plum, as well as forest species like willow, poplar, and birch. Its broad host range allows it to survive in diverse ecosystems, from dense forests to residential gardens.

Biology and life cycle: The species typically completes one generation per year. It overwinters in the egg stage, with females depositing clusters in ring-like formations around small twigs. As temperatures rise in spring, the larvae hatch and exhibit gregarious behavior, constructing silky, tent-like webs where they congregate between feeding periods.

Damage and pest status: The damage is primarily caused by larval feeding. Early instars perform skeletonization of leaves, while mature caterpillars consume entire leaf blades, leaving only midribs. Repeated defoliation weakens the overall health of the trees, reduces fruit yield, and makes the wood more susceptible to secondary pathogens and climate stress.

Protection measures: Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is crucial for controlling Malacosoma lutescens. Key approaches include:
