Lackey moth

The lackey moth (Malacosoma neustria) is a prominent member of the Lasiocampidae family. It is a well-known pest in many parts of the world, recognized by the distinctive egg rings deposited by females on the twigs of host trees, which serve as the overwintering stage for the species.

This insect is highly polyphagous, attacking a wide range of deciduous trees. Its preferred hosts include fruit-bearing trees like apple, pear, plum, and cherry, as well as forest trees such as oak and birch. The caterpillars are voracious feeders that can cause significant economic loss in both orchards and natural habitats.

The life cycle involves a single generation per year. Larvae emerge in the spring, coinciding with bud burst. A notable biological feature is the gregarious behavior of the larvae, which construct silk tents in the forks of branches. These tents protect the caterpillars and serve as a central hub for their daily foraging activities.

Damage is characterized by extensive defoliation of the host plants. Young larvae feed on the epidermis of leaves, while older caterpillars consume entire leaves, leaving only the midribs intact. Severe infestations lead to tree weakening, reduced fruit quality, and increased susceptibility to secondary infections and environmental stress.
