Description

The Sonoran tent caterpillar (scientific name Malacosoma tigris) is a moth species belonging to the family Lasiocampidae. It is recognized as a significant defoliating pest that affects various hardwood trees, particularly within the arid regions of North America.

This pest primarily feeds on a variety of tree species, with oaks (Quercus genus) being its preferred host. They may also infest other deciduous trees like willows. The larvae are voracious feeders, often causing complete defoliation of host trees when population densities reach outbreak levels.

The lifecycle of Malacosoma tigris involves egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. Eggs are deposited in characteristic ring-like masses around small twigs, which serve as the overwintering stage. Upon hatching in the spring, the larvae congregate to form distinct silken tents, which provide protection from predators and environmental extremes while they feed.

Damage occurs primarily through the consumption of foliage, which can significantly weaken the trees. Extensive feeding reduces the tree's photosynthetic capacity, leading to poor growth, branch dieback, and increased susceptibility to other biotic and abiotic stressors. Repeated defoliation events can potentially kill sensitive or weakened trees.

Effective management strategies involve a combination of monitoring and intervention. Cultural control, such as pruning and destroying egg masses during winter, is highly effective for small-scale infestations. During the active larval phase, biological control agents like Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) are recommended to mitigate damage while minimizing the impact on non-target species.
