Oriental beetle

The Oriental beetle (Maladera orientalis) belongs to the family Scarabaeidae, within the order Coleoptera. It is a notorious polyphagous pest originating from East Asia. The adult beetles are characterized by their compact shape and dark, often metallic appearance, making them common in various agricultural and horticultural settings.

This pest affects a wide array of crops, including fruit trees, small fruits, vegetables, and ornamental turfgrasses. Both the adult stage and the larval stage contribute to significant economic losses. While adults primarily feed on the foliage of the plants, the larvae, which reside underground, pose a severe threat by feeding directly on the root systems.

The biological cycle of this insect is centered around the soil environment. Females typically oviposit in moist, organic-rich soil. Upon hatching, the larvae go through three instars, during which they become highly destructive to subterranean plant structures. The duration of the life cycle can vary based on regional temperatures and food availability, often spanning a full year or more.

In terms of damage, adult beetles cause defoliation, which hampers the plant's ability to photosynthesize effectively, leading to stunted growth. The larval stage is often more devastating, as they consume root hairs and main roots. Plants infested with high densities of larvae exhibit symptoms similar to drought stress, including wilting, yellowing, and eventual plant death.

Effective management requires an integrated pest management (IPM) approach to minimize crop damage. Key strategies include:

• Implementing deep tillage practices to disturb and expose larvae to predators.
• Using biological control agents such as entomopathogenic fungi or beneficial nematodes.
• Deploying light traps to monitor and manage adult population levels.
• Applying soil-incorporated insecticides when larval populations exceed established economic thresholds.
